Finished Quilts This Week: HST and Improv

I finished two small quilts this week, hooray! My quilts tend to get stuck in a holding pattern after the top is pieced, so it always feels good to completely finish a project.

Ombre HST Wall Quilt

First up, I finished my half square triangle mini quilt made with ombre fabrics. For the quilting I used two shades of gray thread echoing the overall arrow shape. For the binding I used some turquoise binding that I had left over from a previous project. This is a wall quilt so no one will see the backing, right? I used a kinda, sorta color-related print from my stash. Zoo animals anyone? See my earlier post Accurate Half Square Triangles From Strips for a tutorial on how to cut the triangles from jelly roll strips of the ombre fabric.

 Gray Scale Improv Wall Quilt

The second finish is one of the quilts that I showed in progress in an earlier post Playing With Artful Improv Quilts. The color scheme is shades of gray with just a touch of lavender. I used a grid of straight lines for the quilting and varied the width over the curves panel for a bit more textural interest. I do love a straight line! The quilting thread is 50 wt Aurifil Silver Moon, which is variegated but with a subtle effect. I used ombre strips for the binding and I think the lighter portions gleaming on the sides turned out kind of cool. The ombre strips were from the the same jelly roll that I used for the half square triangle quilt. I love the serendipity of using what just happens to be hanging around on the sewing table. I’m definitely going to make more improv projects!

Cheers,
Sandy

  1. Your quilts look fantastic, and your choice of colors on the binding really pulled them both together. I like how you varied the width of the stitching in the improv quilt inside the blocks, great way to pull the eye to the area of interest. It’s so nice to have a quilt done, a great sense of accomplishment worth telling the world! 🙂

  2. The ombré quilt is a great use of those fabrics. The quilting on this quilt is terrific, too. I also love your playing with grey and the quilting you did on it. Nice work on your finishes.

  3. I really think both mini quilts are fantastic. The ombre one places the colors and shades together so artfully and I really love the quilting on the artful improv mini. Congratulations on two finishes in a week!

  4. I love how the ombre quilt turned out! I was hoping you would post the finished piece! The improv quilt is also very cool. The colors are so calming.

Comments are great, I read them all!
