It is hard to resist quilting tools and gadgets, at least for me. Some impulse purchases end up in my once-used collection, or even the never-used collection. (Hanging my head in shame here.) Some tools though become amazing additions to my cool-tools-how-did-I-ever-do-without-it collection. I recently bought an LED light box and this is definitely a Cool Tool!
If you have been following me then you know that I’ve been co-hosting the I Wish You a Merry Quilt A-Long which has included a fun variety of blocks designed with different techniques. I have discovered that a light box is an essential tool for appliqué and foundation paper piecing. There are many brands available, this just happens to be the one I bought on Amazon for about $20.
It is super slim, maybe 1/4″ thick or less, and it is super bright. With the light box I can see lines well enough to trace through a layer of fusible and a layer of fabric. I can also see lines well enough through fabric to line up patches for foundation paper piecing. No more trying to hold things up to a desk lamp! This particular model has a USB power cord. Convenient for me because the power strip at my sewing station has two USB outlets. If you don’t have a USB outlet handy you would need to plug into a charger like you use for a phone. Since it is about the size of a tablet of paper it fits nicely on the bookshelf with the sketch books that I keep close at hand.
Maybe Santa will bring you a light box for your Cool Tools collection.
