Sew Let's Quilt Along Segment 1 Wrap-Up and Projects:

We are wrapping up Segment 1 of the Sew Let's Quilt Along. I hope you enjoyed making the first five blocks as much as I did! I am making fun little projects with my blocks instead of saving them up for a big quilt. In this post I am sharing my projects and hope you will be inspired to make something similar.

Wall Hanging

I made my Sewing Machine block into a wall hanging so I can see it every day in my sewing studio.

Hot Mats

I made the Spinning Spool block and the Quilt Shop block into hot mats. I used Insul-Bright Batting from the Warm Company for the hot mats. This batting reflects heat and is great to use in making things like hot mats and oven mitts.

Large Tote Bag

And last but not least, I made a large tote bag and decorated it with the Quilter's Mug block and the Spinning Spools block.

I wanted to make a large, sturdy tote bag that I could use to carry quilts to show-and-tell. I didn't need any fancy details like zippers or pockets so I wrote my own easy pattern. You can get a copy of the pattern with the download button below. I hope you will try making a tote bag and do let me know if you have any questions about the pattern instructions.

Tips on Making the Tote Bag

Prepare a quilt block and sew it to one of the exterior fabric pieces. I actually sewed a quilt block on both pieces of exterior fabric so both sides are decorated.
The trickiest step is making the box corners for the bottom. You cut a 3" square out of each corner. Then pinch the corners up to line up the seams and bring the raw edges together. The exterior fabric pieces are lined with fusible batting which makes thick layers. I used binding clips to hold the layers together and a walking foot to do the sewing.
