Quilt Along By The Sea Block 1
Today is the release day for the first block in the Quilt Along By The Sea! This fabulous block, called She Sews Seashells By The Seashore, was designed by Becca Fenstermaker. You can find the block pattern on her website at Pretty Piney Quilts.
My Fabric Choices
For this quilt along I am pulling from my print fabric bins. I plan to use selected prints in multiple blocks and supplement them with solids when appropriate. One firm rule: only from my stash!
My Version of Block 1
This is my version of Becca's fun block. I loved her technique for making the curves and I think you will find it easier than you expect. I chose two blues, one white, and four shades of tan for the background and three prints for the shells that would stand out from the background.
My Tips for Block 1
I used a light panel and a reversed version of the template under the background to help lay out the appliqué pieces. I created the reversed version of the template by simply outlining the template shapes with a marker on the backside of the pattern page.
There are some sharp corners to sew around for the appliqué. I suggest experimenting with a narrower version of your chosen stitch and make sure the needle is on the outside of the shape when you stop to pivot your fabric.
